Marcia Pantera
First drag queen in Brazil, hair-flipping creator and forerunner”: that’s how Marcia Pantera introduces herself. However, there are many other titles that could be added in this mini bio. Athlete from an early age, at the age of 15 she set up with friends from Brasilândia and Freguesia do Ó (the North Side of São Paulo city) what would be the first openly gay volleyball team in the country. And when Carlos Márcio José da Silva gave up his promising career as a top team professional volleyball player to embrace his true passion, São Paulo lost an athlete, but the world’s LGBTQIA+ stages gained a talent. Fashion icon, Alexandre Herchcovitch’s model and inspiration, she presented her incomparable mastery in drag art in several countries, always taking blackness, Brazilianness and physical power as her hallmarks. Upon turning 50 and 32-year career, Marcia Pantera is the Icon Mix 2020, joining the team formed by Gus Van Sant, João W. Nery and Marina Lima, personalities honored in the first three editions of the award.
